I saw him lifted from the water. I looked at once for signs

of violence, but found none. There was no wound or bruise. The eyes were closed and the mouth shut. The body was in good condition. There was only a slight discolouration beka the chin. The body was then towed to Poklo city and remain- ed that night on the boat, moored just outside the city wall

opposite the yazen.

June 6th. I was asked by Teung K'ã cheong to witness the

placing of the body in a Chinese coffin. The coffin had been puttied at my suggestion and at 10.20 a.m. the body was placed in it. The body was then very swollen and much dis- coloured. After consultation with me it was decided to nail

the coffin down securely. It was then placed in a small unused temple on the river side. The roof was roughly re-

paired with palm leaves. It rained in torrents at this time. Young K'a cheong asked me if there was any place on our compound, where the coffin could be placed and I put a room in the dispensary at his disposal. I think that this official was prompted to take this step by genuine good

feeling.

Since the afternoon of Friday until this morning June 10th, the coffin has been in my care, awaiting instructions. This morning 7.45 a.m. it was taken by Yeung K'i cheong in a special boat to Shaklung, I telegraphed Mr. Garrod,

Bheklung.

Two rings were got back from the fishermen, who found the body. These rings were recovered solely by my iniative, after the body was put in the coffin. I handed them to Young K'ü cheong to be given to Mr. Garrod in Sheklung.

The magistrate has given a reward of ten dollars to the three men concerned in the recovery of the body. In the light of Chinese superstition concerning dromed people and their usual treatment of the same, the reward seems small.

If I might do so, I should like to suggest this sum should

be
